Religious faith inspires people; it can offer peace of mind, generate fellowship, inspire creativity and provide stability amidst life’s turmoil. It may have been fundamental to your upbringing, or you may have had a conversion experience that reshaped your life.
However, the loss of religious faith can be a source of problems. Your personal relationships can enter a complicated phase in which religious verities don’t seem to make sense. Or maybe for some reason or other you simply lost the certainties you had, and that loss is disturbing. Possibly you have hidden the loss and got on with life. But it’s also possible that you’ve broken away from your faith community and you’ve lost close ties to friends and family; that loss can bring a deep sadness that needs shared with someone who understands.
However, your experience of faith may not have been a fundamentalist one. You may have embraced a community of faith that seemed fresh, new and open-minded. Yet that vibrant religious community fell apart and left you with disillusionment or burn-out. Sharing how you feel about it would be of help.
If you have read these paragraphs and they resonate, then you have come to the right place; my job as a therapist involves working with clients who suffer from mental distress connected to religious faith or its loss.
I have been influenced by the anxieties of my own fundamentalist Protestant past, which is one reason why I can offer therapeutic support. My subsequent training has involved close attention to fundamentalist upbringings, where I gained further insights into how they impact on adult mental health and how a route towards personal well-being is still possible.
